Alima Bello says that her career in fashion was born out of necessity. Growing up in Accra, Ghana, she couldn’t find a style aesthetic she could relate to. She wanted her silhouette and fabrics to be straight to the point. Chosen with purpose. No unnecessary fuss. And so womenswear brand Bello Edu was born. Being a first born child, she had tried to follow in the family business footsteps, but a stronger desire to pursue her own path and explore her creativity beckoned. Her first collection debuted in 2014 and in 2017 she opened the doors to the brand’s flagship store in Accra. While she celebrates her proudly Nigerian and Ghanaian heritage, her collection is also a reflection of her own modern love of fashion. A globally appealing palette with feminine silhouettes featuring ruffles and puffed sleeves, rich metallic fabrics but also plenty of neutrals make this a one stop design wonderland. Here a variety of tastes and events are catered for. As a female business owner she is also fiercely committed to supporting other women in the fashion field. The brand’s fabrics are sourced from local businesses which are predominantly female owned. The studio’s production team is comprised of 50% women and the local factories that the brand works with are all female-owned businesses. Bell has a strong conviction to encourage and participate in manufacturing within the continent in order to contribute towards the growth of the fashion and creative industries. We feel she is contributing in more ways than one.
