NONTERAH-URBAN AFRICAN APPAREL The designs of Nonterah capture your attention with its exquisite tailoring, interesting vibrant prints and unique detailing. Working with mainly local and natural fabrics, such as mud cloth, cotton lace, linen and cottons, each item is hand made, ensuring that no two items are the same. All the garments are made in Ghana, thereby creating employment for the local people whilst raising production standards and revolutionarising couture in Ghana. Ben also incorporates fabrics from the north of Ghana into his designs in order to give back economically to that region. With the use of African motifs such as Ashanti adinkra symbols and accessories, Nonterah creates his designs to stand out as well as be stylish and wearable anywhere in the world. His designs therefore reflect the brands by-line of being African and yet globally urban. Nonterah's creations are patronized and worn by musicians, athletes, politicians and other personalities across the globe. Ben Nonterah is the brain behind the label and struck out as a designer in the early 90’s on a shoestring budget. Through hard work, creativity and a positive attitude he is one of the most stylish, non mainstream designers to come out of Africa. From 2001 to 2008, he partnered with Bee Arthur under the name Benign and B'Exotiq. However in 2008 he re-branded his business and went solo again under the brand name Nonterah. Ben has roots in the North of Ghana, a part of the country which is often neglected and unrecognized for its rich culture. The choice of the name of his label was therefore to celebrate and recognize his heritage. The Nonterah logo depicts the circle of life and an arrow that points to the ground, representing being grounded. The Nonterah brand has been showcased in muntries such the UK, the USA, South Africa, Ethiopia Germany, Cameroon, France and Ouagadougou, Some of the events have been the Kora Awards 2001 Sun City (where he and his then business partner won the Kora Award for Fashion), the Afric Collecti in Cameroun, FESPACO and SIAO in Bourkina Faso, Africanmosaique Fashion Show in Ethiopia and Met Face of Africa 2008 in South Africa. The brand also won the Most Innovative Exhibitor in garme at the Ghana International Trade Fair in Accra in 2000. Bens collection for the AFI week, is inspired by the convergence of models from all over the contin His choice of colors (gold, orange, brown, silver and a carnival of other colors), fabrics, de ambelishments and designs fit into any urban setting in Africa to emphasize how the borders of have shrunk due to IT and travel. The music for the show was chosen as it is obviously African am one cannot identify exactly which African country it is from, celebrating all the countries as one.
