Selasi von Hausen has always been intrigued by clothes. From a young age she would take old clothes apart and sew them back together on her mother’s old sewing machine until she understood their construction and what effect various sewing techniques would have on a garment. It was this kind of tenacity that made her step away from a potential career in hospitality and tourism, and pursue a passion for fashion design. Six years after going to fashion school, von Hausen started her own namesake brand and the rest is fashion history. She creates her art by combining shapes, textures and colours using contrasting fabrics, weaving an African narrative seamlessly into a range that can be dressed up or down. Breathable fabrications are key because of her native Ghana’s hot climate. Her latest collection is an exploration of femininity which pairs softer more intricate fabrics and print work with stronger masculine shapes.
