Kenyan designer Sylvia Omina Otsieno fuses smart sustainability with traditional storytelling, to create one-of-a-kind showstoppers. Each piece in the Omina Otsieno collection is meticulously handwoven from locally farmed banana fibre. Otsieno has harnassed a previously discarded by-product of the farming industry and transformed it into the heart of a slow fashion business. The unique weaves and twists of this material have been adapted from traditional Marachi baskets and ropes and are fashioned by women in Otsieno’s native Busia community. Finishing brass and ceramic touches are co-created by artisans in Nairobi. Fostering these sadly fading traditional techniques and uplifting her local community are a passion for Otsieno and it shows. From elegant neck pieces to statement earrings, each item is delicately woven yet strong in stand-out appeal.
